MUSIC

Audition: Usually the applicant is required to audition in person. Sometimes video and audio

recordings are considered in place of a live audition. Applicants to the Composition

Department have original compositions examined by that department; finalists interview on

campus or in major cities. Applicants who wish to be double majors must audition separately

for each major department and must be admitted by each faculty.

Auditions are scheduled on specific dates for each department at the convenience of

the faculty. The filing of an application does not oblige the school to grant an audition.

Applicants should be aware that auditions maybe videotaped and recorded (for panel

review only).

School will usually provide an accompanist for auditions in cello, guitar, flute, opera,

viola, violin, and voice. All other auditions are played without piano. The applicant must

supply the accompanist with the appropriate piano scores at the time of audition; it is up

to the discretion of the audition committee whether the audition will be heard if no music is provided. Photocopied music is not acceptable in place of a score.

Repertoire: Some departments permit latitude in the selection of works to be presented, while others (e.g. composition, conducting, orchestral instruments, keyboard instruments, vocal studies) require specific repertoire. Usually no substitutions or exceptions to the stated audition requirements will be permitted. Applicants may also be asked to show their sight-reading ability. A knowledge of piano and music theory is desirable.

While the choice of composition is important, audition performance carries the greater weight. The final admission decision rests upon the evidence of talent shown rather than upon the degree of proficiency already attained. Admission is limited to those whose inherent musical gift shows promise of development to a point of exceptional professional quality. In major departments with more than one instructor, student placement is determined by the consensus of the faculty of that department.

VISUAL ARTS

All prospective applicants are urged to follow a college preparatory program in secondary school, taking courses in studio art and art history where possible. Graduation from secondary school is a prerequisite, although in certain cases a high school equivalency diploma may be accepted. Candidates for the Bachelor of Architecture degree must have completed two semesters of algebra, one semester of trigonometry, and one year of science (preferably physics). Courses that develop visual and design skills, such as studio drawing, are strongly recommended.

Portfolio: Most schools require two drawing samples from all candidates. Sometimes school has specific requirement about the drawing - subjects, dimensions, medium - graphite pencil, any dry (fixable) medium, ink, watercolor or gouache, or a combination of these media. The drawings may be abstract expressions or representational observations; the object maybe drawn alone or placed  in a situation. The drawings must be submitted in their original form, not as reproductions.

Schools generally require applicant to submit a portfolio should consist of 10 to 20 examples of any type of two- or three dimensional work recently completed.  The work should reflect your ideas, interests, experience, abilities, and willingness to explore, experiment, and express yourself in the arts to date. It may be in any media, may be finished or in sketch form, and may be the result of an assigned class project or a self-directed exploration. Applicants are encouraged to take risks and be inventive. Applicants should submit the portfolio in a format required by the school. Some schools may require interview.

DANCE AND DRAMA

Dance and Drama applicants who reside outside of the U.S. or Canada are required to pre-screen for an invitation to a live audition. All applicants must have prior dance training. A minimum of three years experience with ballet and modern dance vocabulary is required or highly recommended, and dancers should currently be training for a minimum of 10 hours per week.
